Mandi Schwartz Memorial Bursary
Mandi Schwartz grew up playing hockey with her brothers in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. She graduated from Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in 2006, having been the captain of her team. After her graduation from Notre Dame, she commenced studies at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, and made the Womens’ Varsity Hockey Team in her freshman year.
A player known for her tenacity and spirit, Mandi had a string of 73 consecutive games as a Yale Bulldog.
Mandi was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December 2008, during her junior year at Yale. Although she underwent a cord donor procedure in Seattle in September 2010, her cancer returned. Mandi passed away on April 3, 2011 at the age of 23.
In honour of Mandi, Yale continues to host marrow donor drives each year, adding thousands to donor registries in the U.S. and Canada. At least six matches have been located as a result of the Yale donor drives.
Today, the Mandi Schwartz Foundation (www.mandi17.org) continues to raise awareness and funding to assist others.
Each year, Schwartz & Company donates a bursary in Mandi’s name to a deserving School District 23 student. For more information, please contact Steve Schwartz at Schwartz & Company, or visit the Central Okanagan Bursary and Scholarship Society at www.cobss.sd23.bc.ca.
